Transition From High School
I became an self advocate just about 3 years ago when I created a blog about my life but this is my first year in full force. In high school I was often forgotten even through I was in a regular school setting I was the only one in a wheelchair. I was never involved in anything in school I never even been on trips. There is where I found my voice.and joined agenices such as UCP for surpport and there is when a whole new world opened up to me. Becoming an advocate has change my life, I advocated for myself when it was time for me to graduate high school the surpport team had no plan for my future. I was told one of my teachers was transition coordinator but I never knew they never offered help. They had no plans for me. I spoke up for myself and that's how I got what I want. They had plan on placing me in a day program due to my physical challenges they asked me my thoughts and I said find me a college or surpported employment that’s it no less! They thought I was joking because I am shy I never spoke to anyone but did they take the time to get to know me one on one and to find out what I know and what was going on in my mind. Now I am at a place who acceptance me for who I am..provides surpport in order for me to grow and keeps track on me. I also help pass the Able Act law with Charles Schumer. Through all I faced in life look where I am today. Ask me where I will like to be in 5 to 10 years. I want to be siting in an office..
